Seeking an EMDR Therapist?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful healing method that has helped an estimated half million people, adults, young people and children, relieve many troublesome symptoms resulting from TRAUMA.

Evidence suggests that for many clients EMDR can significantly shorten the length of treatment and enhance results far beyond the scope of being involved in talking therapy alone. The reason for this is that emotional wounds are located in a more primitive part of the brain that are not accessible to language.

Research suggests that it may be difficult for our brain to process a traumatic or very negative event. This inhibits our ability to recover and over time, symptoms either do not go away or even get worse. The incident becomes stuck in a dysfunctional way. When you remember, you may actually relive it or experience strong emotions and physical sensations or conversely, you may feel numb and shut-down from your emotions.

EMDR has evolved through the contributions of therapists and researchers all over the world. Therapists follow a specifically designed protocol and the process of EMDR involves a combination of dual stimulation (eye movements, auditory tones, tapping), and gently focusing on images, emotions, thoughts and body sensations associated with your personal trauma.

Your EMDR Therapist will work with you to track whatever comes to the surface until the negative aspects are neutralized. EMDR is not a single session approach or `cure’. The first session is an initial assessment where the therapist will provide additional information about how EMDR works and the 8 phase treatment protocol.

Here at the Manchester Centre for CBT EMDR is one of the Therapies available. All our associate Therapists are independent, qualified and experienced practitioners who abide by appropriate professional Ethical Frameworks, codes of practice and are individually insured. They manage their own diaries and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about their training , qualifications or areas of expertise.
